The Stravronikita project by the Viennese artist Andreas Franke: the Rococo meets the ship wreck of SS Stravronikita off the coast of Barbados.The project describes the shipwreck as overflowing with marine life, a “symbol of life’s irrepressible avidity,” with the Rococo aesthetic with its extravagance and indulgence as its surface correspondent. The photoseries thus presents such scenes of excess which exist in an uneasy dialectic with their organic surroundings. After all, the word rococo originates partly from coquille, the French word for shells.
